KARACHI, Nov 27: A supporter of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement was shot dead and another party worker and a donkey-cart rider were wounded in an attack in the Nishtar Road area at around noon on Thursday, the Jamshed Quarters police said.
Maula Dad, 35, a resident of Lyari, and his friend, Shahid, were on way on their motorcycle when two armed persons on another motorcycle intercepted them near Lasbela.
The police said that the armed men fired two to three shots into the air before opening straight fire at the victims. A passing-by donkey-cart rider also sustained a bullet wound, they added.
The victims were shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where Maula Dad succumbed to his wounds.
The police registered a murder case against unknown attackers on behalf of the state as the victims’ relatives did not approach the police.
Jamshed Town SP Javed Akbar Riaz told Dawn that a brother of the deceased contacted the police later in the evening and stated that his brother had a personal enmity. “The victim’s brother said that he would name the suspects after the funeral,” he added.
In another incident, a cattle trader was shot dead on the National Highway near Bhains Colony.
The Shah Latif Town police said that the victim, Hashmat Ali, son of Mulazim Hussain, was on way in his car when two attackers on a motorcycle opened fire, killing him instantly. The victim was a resident of Bakra Peeri, Malir City.
The police said that murder seemed to be motivated by a personal feud as the victim’s belongings, including his wallet and mobile phone, were found intact.
The police have registered a case against unknown culprits on the complaint of the victim’s son.
Body found
The partially decomposed body of a middle-aged man was found in a fiber drum in a drain near PNS Shifa in Defence Housing Authority. The body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for a postmortem examination.
Sources at the hospital’s medico-legal section told Dawn that the body was at least four days old and it bore several marks of torture.
They said that the victim, clad in brown-coloured shalwar-kameez, appeared to be in his early 40s.
Later, the body was sent to the Edhi morgue as the victim remained unidentified.
The police have registered a case against unknown culprits on behalf of the state.
Factory owner shot dead
A 40-year-old man was shot dead in New Karachi late on Wednesday night.
The police said that the victim, identified as Dr Mohammed Arif, was on way in his car when unknown attackers opened fire. He died instantly, they said. The victim was stated to be owner of a factory.
Minibus conductor shot dead
A minibus conductor was shot dead at National Chowk in Ittehad Town, a neighbourhood of Baldia Town.
Mochko police said that unknown culprits shot dead Niaz Dar, 45, in the minibus and fled the scene.
A case (FIR No.308/2008) was registered against unknown culprits under sections 302 and 43 of the Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of the minibus driver, Zarin Shah.
He reported to the police that he was driving the minibus when he heard a shot. He said that passengers started getting down the vehicle following the attack. He said that he found the conductor shot and wounded in the vehicle.
The victim was shifted to the Civil Hospital where he later died.
Sources at the hospital’s medico-legal section told Dawn that the victim, who hailed from upcountry, received a fatal bullet wound to his head.
The police said the incident seemed to be motivated by a personal feud.
Woman wounded
A 35-year-old woman was wounded when she sustained a stray bullet at her Metroville house.
The Site police said that the victim, Samina, wife of Tariq, was at the rooftop of her house in the morning when a stray bullet hit her in the right arm. She was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment.
Two motorcyclists killed
Two motorcyclists were killed by a hit-and-run vehicle at Northern Bypass near Hamdard University.
The bodies were shifted to the Civil Hospital where the deceased were identified as Shah Faisal, son of Syed Mohammed, 18, and Bashir Ahmed, son of Noor Ahmed, 24, both residents of Ali Mohammed Goth.
The Manghopir police said that the victims’ relatives took away the bodies from the hospital without medico-legal formalities as they did not want any legal proceedings.
Young man run over
A 19-year-old man was crushed to death by a fast moving school van in Ibrahim Haideri area.
The deceased was shifted to the JPMC where he was identified as Shaukat, son of Mohammed Yaqoob, a resident of Korangi No.1.
Police said that the school bus driver, who remained unidentified, fled the scene after the incident. The police impounded the vehicle.
They said a case (FIR No.308/2008) was registered against the absconding driver under Section 320 (Qatl-i-Khata by negligent driving) of the Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of the victim’s cousin, Mohammed Rajab.
Elderly woman killed
A 65-year-old woman was killed and a five-year-old man seriously injured when a fast moving dumper ran over them near 4-K Chowrangi in North Karachi.
Witnesses said that the dumper driver fled the scene after abandoning his vehicle which was set on fire by a mob.
The deceased woman and the injured man were shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where they were identified as Bashirun Nisa, wife of Mohammed Hafeez, and Mian Noor, both residents of New Karachi.
The witnesses said that the dumper had earlier hit two motorcyclists in Khawaja Ajmair Nagri and the driver was on run. The dumper went out of his control and ran over the other victims.
No case was registered till late as the police said that the efforts were being made to track down the dumper’s owner and driver.
Boy killed
A nine-year-old boy was knocked down by a truck on Agra Taj Colony road. The Kalri police said that the victim, Abdul Ghani, son of Sher Mohammed, was crossing the road when he was hit by the truck.
They said that the truck driver, Mohammed Shafi, was booked and arrested in a case (FIR No.303/2008) was registered on the complaint of the victim’s paternal uncle, Mohammed Azam.
Bus torched
A mob torched a bus of route 1-D on M.A. Jinnah Road near Numaish after it collided with a car. The drivers of the two vehicles had an altercation before the mob set the bus on fire.
The bus was partially damaged as a fire-tender immediately reached the spot and extinguished the fire.
Carjacking
A total of 43 vehicles – eight cars and 35 motorcycles – and 46 cellular phones were taken away in the city during the 24 hours ending on Thursday evening.
Officials said that four cars were snatched at gunpoint within the limits of Shah Latif Town, Surjani Town, Sohrab Goth and Mubina Town, while four automobiles were stolen in the police precincts of Baldia Town, Yousuf Plaza, Jauharabad and Ferozeabad.
They said that the bandits snatched 14 motorcycles at gunpoint in the jurisdictions of Kharadar, Gadap City, Gulberg, Gulistan-i-Jauhar, New Town, Soldier Bazaar, Ferozeabad, Korangi Industrial Area, Nazimabad, Khawaja Ajmair Nagri, Mominabad and Saddar police stations.
The officials said that 21 motorcycles were stolen in the police areas of Gizri, Darakhshan, Defence, Frere, Gabol Town, Sher Shah, Zaman Town, Korangi Industrial Area, Nazimabad, Baghdadi, Bilal Colony, North Nazimabad, Mominabad, Orangi Town, Preedy, Peerabad and Site.
They said that 27 cellular phones were snatched at gunpoint and another 19 were stolen in the city.
The officials said that 97 cellular phones, 42 motorcycles and 16 cars had been taken away in different parts of the city on Wednesday.
