Naanbais warn of indefinite strike

RAWALPINDI, Nov 25: Naanbais Association on Tuesday threatened to go on indefinite strike if the district administration failed to supply flour to Tandoorwalas and alleged the elected representatives were involved in flour theft.

The Naanbais say that over 3,000 tandoors out of 4,000 in the city were not getting flour despite the fact that a daily quota of 7,000 bags of 20-kg has been fixed by Punjab government for Rawalpindi city.

“Over 3,000 Tandoors are not getting flour for the last three weeks and we are compelled to buy the commodity from market in order to run our business. We are not getting flour on subsidised rates,” general secretary Naanbais Association Shafique Qureshi said.

He threatened that over 3,000 Tandoorwalas would go on strike if the district administration failed to provide them flour and alleged that some elected representatives of PML-N in connivance with the district administration were involved in the theft of flour.

A Tandoorwala gets a bag of 20 kg for Rs260 while in open market it is sold for Rs430.

“Where do the 7,000 bags of flour go when 3,000 oven owners are not getting the commodity for the last three weeks? It clearly indicates that the suppliers of the flour are involved in the flour theft. We have no option but to go on strike,” the general-secretary of the association added.
