ISLAMABAD, Nov 25: About a million people have left their homes because of military operations and incidents of violence in Bajaur, North and South Waziristan, Kurram and Mohmand agencies and Darra Adamkhel and Swat regions.
This was stated by the chief of the NWFP chapter of the Jamaat-i-Islami, Sirajul Haq, during a discussion with a group of reporters on Monday night.
According to Mr Haq, the number of the internally-displaced people is about one million but the United Nations High Commission for Refugees disputes the figure and says that there are 40,000 registered and 26,000 unregistered people displaced from Bajaur Agency.
Mr Haq called for early implementation of the resolution adopted unanimously by the two houses of parliament, calling for a dialogue among tribesmen. He regretted that despite a change brought about by the Feb 18 general elections, the establishment was still playing games to make the democratic system fail.
Accusing the Awami National Party of acting on behalf of the forces which were against Pakistan’s sovereignty and integrity, he said this was the only reason the ANP had been brought to power in the NWFP and given a share in power at the centre.
He said his party would hold a conference in Peshawar on Sunday to discuss lack of government help for the displaced people.
Mr Haq said the people of the province fully supported Qazi Hussain Ahmed’s proposal to stop Nato supplies passing through Pakistan and to march on Islamabad.
