KARACHI: Five killed in road accidents

KARACHI, Nov 24: Five people died on Monday in different traffic accidents in the city, police and witnesses said. Besides, two people were killed in acts of violence in separate localities.
A 35-year-old man was killed and another injured when a fast-moving water tanker hit their motorbike at KPT Flyover near Qayyumabad.
The Korangi Industrial Area police said that Mohammed Riaz, a factory worker and resident of Zia Colony in Korangi, was on his way to his workplace along with his friend, Kashif, when they were knocked down by the water carrier at around 10am.
Witnesses said that the motorcyclist died instantly and the pillion rider was injured in the accident. They said that the onlookers ran amok and gave a hiding to the driver before setting his vehicle on fire.
The police said that a police mobile rushed to the spot to rescue the reckless tanker driver from the enraged people.
They said that a fire brigade engine also reached the spot immediately and saved the water carrier from complete destruction.
Fire brigade sources said that the truck was partially damaged with burnt cabin seats.
The body and the injured man were shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. Sources at the hospital’s medico-legal section told Dawn that the 20-year-old injured man was in a stable condition.
The police booked and arrested the driver, Qazi Shahzad, in the FIR (446/2008) on the complaint of the injured man.
Killed by hit-and-run vehicle
A 45-year-old man was killed by a hit-and-run vehicle near Bund No 5 of the Malir River behind Shah Faisal Colony.
The Korangi Industrial Area police said that the victim was found dead on the road at around 9am.
The body was shifted to the JPMC where the victim was identified as Mohammed Rasheed, son of Ali Mohammed, a resident of Gulzar Colony, a shantytown in Korangi.
The victim was stated to be a worker at a bakery and he was going to his workplace when he was knocked down by an unidentified vehicle.
The police registered a case (FIR 445/2008) against the unknown driver of the unknown vehicle on the complaint of the victim’s son.
Woman killed
A 27-year-old woman was killed and her maternal nephew injured when a fast-moving car hit their motorcycle near Shireen Jinnah Colony.
The Boat Basin police said that Noor Shad, 23, was on his way with his aunt, Taj Bibi, riding pillion, when at around 2pm a car, bearing registration number QC-5010, knocked them down.
They said the driver of the car sped away and efforts were being made to locate the driver and the vehicle.
The victims were residents of Shah Rasool Colony.
Motorcyclists killed
A 25-year-old motorcyclist was killed when his two-wheeler collided with another motorcyclist near Safoora Goth.
The dead man and the injured were shifted to the JPMC where they were identified as Raja Nadim, son of Raja Asghar, and Kamran Jamal.
The Gulistan-i-Jahaur police said that both the deceased and the injured were residents of Safoora Goth.
No case was registered till late.
Besides, a 32-year-old man was killed when his motorcycle slipped in Nazimabad No 7 at around 2am.
The victim, Rehan, son of Raees, a resident of Soldier Bazaar, was returning home after attending a wedding ceremony when he met his death.
Body found
The body of a 30-year-old man was found on the shore near Illahi Masjid in Docks Colony.
The body was shifted to the Civil Hospital where the victim was identified as Zakir, son of Noor Shah, an idler living at Masang Bhatta Village.
The Jackson police said the victim had been missing since Sunday night.
They said that a murder case (FIR 551/08) was registered against an unknown murderer under Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) on the complaint of the victim’s father, who hailed from the NWFP.
The police said that the murder seemed to be motivated by a personal feud.
ASI booked for murder
An assistant sub-inspector of police was booked for killing his friend, Abdul Hameed, in the small hours of Monday near Khaddi Choki in Korangi.
The police said that the case (FIR 1096) was registered against ASI Raees Lodhi under Section 302 of the PPC on the complaint of the victim’s son, Faizan.
The police said that the suspect had absconded and efforts were being made to track him down.
The police said that the victim was the owner of a cattle pen in Korangi and the suspect was his friend.
Carjackers arrested
The Anti-car Lifting Cell arrested five members of a carjackers’ gang and seized from them as many stolen cars.
According to a press release, the gang dismantled the stolen cars and smuggled out the spare parts to other parts of the country.
It said that a truckload of the spare parts of over 12 stolen cars was also recovered on the lead given by the suspects.
