HBL whip off-colour PEL

LAHORE, Nov 23: Former national champions Habib Bank Limited (HBL) dismantled Pak Elektron Limited (PEL) 6-0 to record the biggest one-sided score line in Pakistan Premier Football League (PPFL) at the Railway Stadium in Lahore on Sunday.

PEL were completely shattered by the bankers who struck twice in the first session and added four more goals in the second. Mohammad Ishtiaq earned a brace while Khayal Mohammad, Mohammad Ibrahim, Zakir Lashari and Waheed Majeed were the other scorers.

HBL held an upper hand right from kick-off, firing the ball into the cage in the 10th minute. Little striker Ishtiaq displaced PEL’s left fullback Muhammad Azam just inside the area to steer the ball low into the left corner via goalkeeper Ahmed Shahzad. Midfielder Khayal Mohammad consolidated the lead in the 29th minute when he took the ball following the right wing cross by skipper Shakir Hussain and hammered the ball into the right corner.

PEL also forced chances in the 18th, 19th, 36th and 40th minute but Bannu-born Asmatullah failed to capitalize on them. On two occasions, HBL’s keeper Sajjad Hussain was on his mercy but he was aimless. HBL led 2-0 at interval.

Seven minutes after resumption, HBL were 4-0 up and they forced PEL’s coach Asghar Anjum to send the Gujranwala-born keeper Mubarak Ali in place of Ahmed. Midfielder Ibrahim went on his own to make it 3-0 in the 50th minute with the rightfooter on the left corner and two minutes later striker Zakir Lashari hoodwinked three markers on the right gallery and clipped the ball in from the narrowest of angles.

Mubarak conceded his first goal in the 70th minute when substitute Bilal Ahmed crossed the ball low from the right wing and unmarked Ishtiaq was on hand to tap the ball into the empty net. Another substitute Waheed Majeed, brother of KPT’s Zafar and Fareed, went into the arena in the 80th minute. He rounded off the tally seven minutes later. He caught the ball from deep defense and was onside as A.R. Shahid Hussain’s flag was down. Waheed continued his run, went round Mubarak and slipped the ball neatly into the net.

Off-colour PEL even failed to earn a consolation goal. Their midfielder Farooq Rehman, playing against his previous team, saw his drive ricocheted off the left post in the second minute of injury time. HBL collected 31 points from 25 matches as compared to PEL’s 27 in 22 games.

Monday’s fixtures: Wapda v Pakistan International Airlines at Railway Stadium, Lahore; Punjab Medical College v National Bank of Pakistan at PMC Ground, Faisalabad. Matches kick off at 2.30pm.
