Trucks carrying supplies for Nato under attack again

By Ibrahim Shinwari

LANDI KOTAL, Nov 22: A convoy of trailers carrying military and other supplies for Nato forces in Afghanistan was hit by a roadside bomb near Jamrud on the Peshawar-Torkham road on Saturday.

Officials said that a driver and a helper were injured and their vehicle was slightly damaged when the convoy hit the device near Shagai Fort, some 20km off here.

The convoy comprising about 80 vehicles was being escorted by security forces, they said.

The injured driver and helper were taken to Jamrud hospital, official sources said.

A witness, Mushtaq Khan, who was travelling on a van, told this correspondent that they narrowly escaped the blast. He said a khasadar checkpoint was only a few yards away from the place where the time bomb was planted. Most of the trailers were carrying Humvee vehicles and other supplies, he added.

It was the first attack on a convoy after the supply link was restored on Monday. Militants had hijacked 13 vehicles near the Jamrud bazaar on Nov 10 suspending all supplies to Nato forces through the Peshawar-Torkham road.

The supply link was restored on Monday after the Khyber Agency administration provided escort for vehicles up to the Torkham border.
