LAHORE, Nov 22: Three-year-old colt Punjabi looks set to win the Tariq Bin Ziad Cup, featuring a six-event card drawn for the 12th Lahore Winter Meeting to be held at the Racecourse on Sunday.

The cup is named after the famed Muslim general and conqueror of Spain.

Of the seven runners left in the field to go over 1,400 metres, only two come into reckoning on recent form and performances. But the form Punjabi is in at present should have the better of them all. The other runners will just be making the field.

This will be the fourth race and a class IV, division I, II and III combined handicap event. The fifth and supporting event, a class V division II handicap race to be gone over the sprinting distance of 1,200 metres has 11 runners to contest for the top honours but only three qualify on recent form and performances. They are Qasid, High Jet and Philogyny.

The first two named are fast sprinters while Philogyny is a slow beginner although the best one around on pedigree line.

Mutajir is a speedy animal but not of the sort of those named above, who are definitely superior in every respect.

Victory Bulbul, Mikkado and Big Bird look good in the third race to be contested over 1,100 metres.

The trio should fight for the spoils with Victory Bulbul having a slight edge over the others. Mikkado, Big Bird and Amazing Boy should fight for places.

Munsaf, Gulf Line and Extravagant attract attention in the second race in which 10 horses are to line up for supremacy. Munsaf looks good over the distance.

Tripple Star, Dam Dama Dam and Amazing Mission are the form horses in the opener. The first named had not been living up to the expectation pinned by the connections. It may be due to bad training at being shy to take a level start. Though assigned the top weight of nine stones two pounds, it should not prove a hurdle in Tripple Star’s victory quest.

The sixth and last race consists of the biggest field of 16 runners barring last-minute withdrawals. There is no outstanding performer, all are just mediocrities. Three look on chance, namely, Kamla, Dream Act and Love Minister.

But they are as inconsistent in performance as the others. That makes the race an open affair. A card of six events, four to be gone over 1,100 metres, two 1,200 metres and one over 1,400 metres will be decided. The first race gets underway at 1.00pm.
