RAWALPINDI, Nov 21: A water boiler at the office of senior superintendent of police (SSP) operation exploded on Friday, leaving two men injured, witnesses said.

The walls and window panes of the office also collapsed, they said.

Shakeel Ahmad, a police department employee, and a labourer suffered injuries and were treated at the scene of the explosion. Both however were in stable condition.

The water boiler had just been installed a few hours before it exploded at around 6pm. Shakeel Ahmad, one of the injured victims, told Dawn that he was cleaning the office when the boiler exploded.

“Had I been hit by flying glass, I would have been killed,” the terror-stricken Shakeel said.The explosion sent a wave of panic among the police officers and other officials who were present in the office.

The SSP operation office also houses the office of SP Traffic Matloob and DSP traffic licencing Abid Shah.

However, DIG traffic, city traffic officer, SP traffic and DSP traffic, who were in a briefing at the time of the explosion in a room situated on the first floor, remained unhurt.

Later, Rescue 1122 ambulance and CID police arrived at the scene of the blast and examined the leftover of the boiler.

SSP Operation Sardar Maqsood Khan told mediapersons that it was a water boiler explosion. It has no link with any terrorist activity, he said.

Meanwhile, two persons, including an unidentified woman, were killed in separate road accidents in Westridge on Friday, police said.

Faiz Ahmed, son of Bashir Ahmed, was killed after being hit by a car on Peshawar Road. The car driver sped off from the scene while the victim was shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital.
