MNA on policing and sweeping spree

MUZAFFARGARH, Nov 20: A Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP’s) lawmaker is creating waves in the city here through his policing and social service tactics.

On Wednesday, MNA Jamshed Dasti ‘raided’ the office of Revenue Department in Mehrpur Qanoongo and ‘caught red-handed’ some officials taking bribe from people for transferring land.

Mr Dasti says he got a tip-off that a naib tehsildar and three patwaris had demanded Rs20,000 from Nazeer Ahmed, a land buyer, for transferring the land to his name. He said he raided the office of the naib tehsildar and retrieved the money to return it to the land buyer.

The MNA said he did not take any action against the officials for they had offered apology and promised that they would not take bribe in the future. Mr Dasti said he had sent a report to the chief minister about prevailing corruption in the department. Besides policing the Revenue Department, the MNA has been joining dozens of social workers and sweepers for the last five days in a `cleanliness week’ being held in the city. The cleanliness drive will continue until Saturday (Nov 22).

Taking a broom in his hand, Mr Dasti along with scores of social workers visits different localities and cleans streets and disposes of the garbage. On the occasion, he delivers speeches about the importance of hygienic conditions and urges the public to own their localities in the matters of cleanliness.

Mr Dasti, who belongs to a lower middle class family, made to the National Assembly in 2008 elections after defeating the sons of the late Nawabzada Nasrullah Khan.

He says it is the right of his constituents to have a clean city. He said that he had skipped the ongoing session of the National Assembly for the cleanliness drive.
