Fraud case against Indian officer

NEW DELHI, Nov 16: A fraud case has been registered against an Indian army officer already under arrest for his alleged involvement in a terrorist attack in Malegaon.

Lt-Col S. Purohit has now been charged with receiving Rs20,000 from a person for an arms licence obtained with forged documents, according to police.

The case was registered against him with the Sarkarwada police station in Nashik by Shirish Yeshwant Date, a resident of Pune. Purohit had allegedly submitted fake documents which claimed Date lived in the Devlali army camp, in the hope that this would ensure a quick issuance of an arms licence.

Police said that Date thought about checking the authenticity of his revolver licence after learning of Purohit’s involvement in the Malegaon blast case and found that fake documents had been used to obtain the licence.

He voluntarily came forward to file the case against Purohit, said police. He has been booked under sections 420, 465, 468, 471 and 474 of the Indian Penal Code. Police are also investigating the persons who aided Purohit in obtaining the fake documents.—APP
