KARACHI, Nov 16: Six vehicles – four trucks and two minibuses – were set on fire in separate incidents in Gulberg on Sunday.

An enraged mob set ablaze four trucks after one of the vehicles knocked down a young motorcyclist in the small hours.

Gulberg police said that a 22-year-old man was run over by a fast-moving truck near Ayesha Manzil. They said onlookers became agitated and gave a hiding to the driver before torching his vehicle.

SP of Gulberg Town Alauddin Abbasi told Dawn that a police team rushed to the spot and arrested the driver immediately after the incident. He said that the accident had occurred at around 1am. A heavy contingent of police reached the spot and brought the situation under control, he added.

Two minibuses were torched a little after noon by workers of the Sunni Tehreek as they carried the body of a slain party worker for burial through the vicinity.

The police said that activists of the Sunni Tehrik set ablaze two minibuses at around 12:30pm. “Seven ST men were arrested and booked for the arson,” they added. They said that the funeral prayers of an ST activist, Qari Nizam, were offered at a ground in Rahimabad. He was buried at Tariq Raod graveyard, the police added.

Man, daughter killed in robbery

A 50-year-old man and his 18-year-daughter were killed inside their house in New Karachi by two bandits, one of whom was arrested later.

The area police said that two bandits barged into the house of Mohammed Suleman, a shop owner, and held the inmates at gunpoint.

They said the bandits collected Rs500,000 and opened fire on the inmates before fleeing. Mohammed Suleman and his daughter, Samina, were killed in the firing while his son, Nasir, suffered injuries.

The police said that a robbery case was registered against a neighbour of the victims on a complaint of Abdur Rahim, brother of Nasir.

Supervisory Police Officer of New Karachi DSP Ali Asghar Shah told Dawn that the victims’ family had cast doubt on one of their neighbours, Iqbal, who was arrested.

“The suspect told us that he knew that a huge amount was there at the victims’ house and he planned the robbery with his friend, Shahid,” he said.
