HUNZA-NAGAR: Nov 13: The two-day teachers’ convention concluded in Gulmit with the commitment to develop synergies among different educational systems to improve the quality of education in the region.

The convention was organised by The Gulmit Educational and Social Welfare Society (GESWS) in order to discuss issues and weaknesses in the education system and find ways to improve the quality of education in the region.

About 50 teachers from government boys and girls schools Gulmit, Diamond Jubilee School and community-based Al-Amyn Model School, Gulmit, participated in the event. Deputy Education Secretary Mehboob Ali Khan was the chief guest while Ibrahim Baig, head of AKES, Field Education Office (FEO), acted as the presiding guest on the final day’s session.

Addressing the convention, Mehboob Ali Khan expressed the need to organise this convention in other parts of the Northern Areas too. He said the teachers of the 21st century should be equipped with advance knowledge, skill and positive attitudes to impart modern education.

He said the government had developed 2010 education policy which would soon be implemented in the Northern Areas. He said the government had 1,250 regular schools in the region.

Mr Khan said school budget committees would be developed in order to ensure proper utilisation of the amount, adding that the department was introducing ECD and other reforms in 72 focused schools under the Unicef project. He said he would investigate the appointment of people in scales nine and seven in Girls High School, Gulmit, who did not belong to Gojal union council.

He said the annual NGO grant for private schools would soon be increased from Rs40,000 to Rs100,000.

Head of FEO Hunza Ibrahim Baig highlighted the activities and commitment of AKES for improving the quality of education in the region.
