KARACHI: MQM, Haqiqi men among six shot dead

KARACHI, Nov 9: Six people, including workers of two political parties, were killed on Sunday in acts of violence in different parts of the city, police and witnesses said.
Tension and panic gripped parts of Malir Colony and its adjoining localities following the killing of 55-year-old Abdur Rashid and his 28-year-old son, Gulzar, in Ammar Yasir Colony. The latter was stated to be a worker of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement.
Area residents told Dawn that the shopkeepers pulled down their shutters and the vehicular traffic disappeared from the streets in Ammar Yasir Colony, Saudabad, Jinnah Square and Khokhrapar following the incident.
The Malir City police said that four armed men on two motorcycles pulled up at the victims’ grocery shop and sprayed them with bullets before fleeing at around 1.45pm. Both the victims died on way to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, they said.
Sources at the hospital’s medico-legal section told Dawn that the victims had received multiple bullet wounds in the upper torso from a close range.
The police have registered a case (FIR No. 266/2008) under Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of Ali Hasan, the youngest son of the grocery store owner. They said the victims were residents of Maria Town.
The Muttahida Qaumi Movement said that Gulzar was a party worker and his father was a party supporter.
Meanwhile, a 60-year-old member of the senior citizens’ committee of the Mohajir Qaumi Movement (Haqiqi) was shot dead in Landhi No 4.
The police said that Shaukat Ali, son of Ahmed Ali, along with his friend, Saeed Ahmed, was on way in a pick-up when two motorcyclists intercepted them. Quoting the victim’s friend the police said the motorcyclists came to the driver’s side and the pillion rider shot at Shaukat Ali.
The body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for a post-mortem examination. Sources at the medico-legal section said the man was shot three bullets, two in his right arm and the third in his neck from a very close range. They said the bullet wound to the victim’s neck proved fatal.
The Landhi police registered a case (FIR No. 246/2008) against unidentified culprits under Section 302 of the PPC on the complaint of the victim’s son, Sadiq Ali.
At Ayesha Manzil, a 38-year-old newspaper agent was found shot dead in small hours of Sunday.
Azizabad police said that Syed Khurrum Ali, son of Syed Athar Ali, had been missing since the previous night. His body was found and subsequently shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for a post-mortem examination in the small hours of Sunday. Hospital sources said the victim was shot a single bullet in his chest.
The police said that the victim was a resident of Federal B’ Area.In the Nabi Bux police limits, a 26-year-old mechanic was shot dead near Jama Masjid at Ghas Bandar in the small hours.
The police said that the body of Mohammed Kamran, son of Ziauddin, was shifted to the Civil Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Sources at the hospital’s medico-legal section told Dawn that the victim had received a single bullet in the upper torso from a close range as the bullet went through the body.
The police said the victim, living with his parents at a flat near Bohra Pir, had recently come out of jail on bail. He had earlier been arrested in a robbery case. On the complaint of his father, the police have registered a murder case (FIR No. 161/2008) against unidentified men under Section 302 of the PPC.
In Sohrab Goth, a 22-year-old man was shot dead.
Police said Najeebullah, son of Mohammed Arif Khan, was killed near Sadiq Hotel. They shifted body to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. Sources at the hospital’s medico-legal section said that the victim had received a single bullet in his chest from a close range as the bullet pierced through the heart.
The police have registered a murder case against unidentified men on a complaint of the victim’s father. They said the victim hailed from the NWFP and the murder seemed to be motivated by a personal feud.
