SUKKUR, Nov 5: Police on Tuesday arrested three people on charges of holding jirga and issuing life threats to a couple for marrying of their own free will some five months ago. Dr Ali Akbar Naich and Aisha Dharejo, of Numaish Road, Old Sukkur entered into a marriage contract on May 15, this year.

Dr Naich said that his wife was a lecturer and their wedding was attended by the girl’s parents and relatives. He said that soon after, some relatives of his wife began issuing threats to her parents for marrying their daughter outside their community and warned them of dire consequences. The girl’s parents then shifted to Hyderabad while some of their relatives forcibly occupied the vacant house, Dr Naich said.

Aisha’s father Gul Hassan Dharejo returned to find the house occupied by his relatives on which he complained to ‘C’ section police against Mohammad Aqil, Ghulam Farid and Nizamuddin. Police got the place vacated but could not make arrests as the accused had fled.

A jirga was held three days ago in Old Sukkur under the presidentship of Mohammad Aqil Dharejo which declared Dr Naich and lecturer Aisha Dharejo karo-kari and decided to kill them, said Dr Naich. He met the DIG Sukkur Bashir Memon on learning the decision of jirga.

The DIG Sukkur immediately ordered “C” section police to take action against the culprits and provide protection to the couple. Police after arresting Mohammad Aqil Dharejo, Ghulam Farid Dharejo and Nizamuddin Dharejo late on Tuesday registered an FIR against them.
