LAHORE, Nov 4: After having meticulously pondered what will be the job of the divisional commissioners, the Punjab government is likely to finally notify the names of officers for the posts on Wednesday (today).

The divisional commissioners were restored on Monday last, but the government has not filled the posts as yet because of want of certain requirements, including the specific functions of the officers.

The subject was discussed at various levels, but finally it was taken up by the provincial bureaucracy which sat for hours on Monday to discuss the future role of the commissioners.

The bureaucracy again met at the Civil Secretariat on Tuesday afternoon under Chief Secretary Javaid Mahmood and discussed for nearly six hours in detail what the commissioners could do to serve the people.

“We are going to finally meet again on Wednesday (today) to finalise recommendations for the role of the commissioners following which we expect the issuance of a notification regarding the filling in of the posts,” a senior official told Dawn after the meeting late in the night.

According to him, all administrative secretaries and those already interviewed by Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif for their selection as the commissioners, attended the meeting.

The secretaries dilated upon the weaker areas in which their departments were not delivering, and where the commissioners could bring about a positive change.

Various secretaries identified areas where the government was spending huge funds with no results because of lack of control or supervision in the field.

They said there were funds but no development schemes, and if they were there, the quality of work was substandard. There were either no teachers or no education because of work shirking or inefficiency.
