SAHIWAL, Nov 4: Around 700 people blocked the GT Road on Monday to protest the killing of a man in an alleged shootout with Dera Rahim police and demanded registration of a case against policemen concerned.

The protesters blocked the road for one and a half hour after keeping Riaz Ahmad’s body on the road. Later, they buried the victim in Takar Shah graveyard after they were assured that action would be taken according to the law.

According to police, Riaz, a resident of 189/9-L, was killed in a shootout when he was allegedly attempting a dacoity bid on G.T. Road on Saturday night.

The family, however, denied the police version and said that he was taken into custody by Dera Rahim police on Oct 26 from village 87/9-L.

Victim’s brother Sabir Ali told Dawn that they had also spotted torture marks on Riaz’s body.

"A heavy police contingent cordoned the graveyard off for around four hours at the time of burial," Tayab Khan, a union councillor from Chak 132/9-L, told Dawn.

ASP Junaid met the family and assured them that a case would be registered against the culprits on Tuesday. However, no case was registered till the filing of this report.

DACOITY: Five dacoits allegedly looted Rs500,000 in cash from a multinational company’s wholesale shop in Pull Bazaar here on Monday night.

The dacoits stormed Khurram Butt’s shop in city’s busiest bazaar at around 8pm and fled after looting the cash. The City police have yet to register a case.

Talking to reporters, Anjuman-i-Tajraan president Serwar Jatala flanked by Butt demanded immediate registration of dacoity case.

He threatened that traders would close down all markets and bazaars if culprits were not brought to book.
