Canada deports paralysed Sikh

OTTAWA, Nov 4: Canadian authorities deported a paralysed Sikh with alleged separatist links overnight to India despite protests from hundreds in the local community, a border official said on Tuesday.

“He was deported back to India last night,” Faith St. John said.

“There were no incidents.” Laibar Singh, 48, had been living at a temple in a suburb of Vancouver, Canada’s westernmost metropolis, since his Canadian refugee claim was denied in December 2007.

Two previous attempts to take him into custody were blocked by hundreds of protestors at the temple and at the Vancouver airport.—AFP
