LAHORE, Oct 30: While declaring that discipline will be maintained at all costs, newly appointed manager of the Pakistan team Yawar Saeed said on Thursday that a two-day training camp will be held in Karachi for the forthcoming One-day International series against the West Indies.

The three-match ODI series in Abu Dhabi will be played from Nov 12.

Yawar, who was selected as the manager in place of Talat Ali, has been named manager for the Abu Dhabi series, following a decision of the new PCB management to appoint the manager on series-to-series basis.

Talat had been appointed for a two-year term in 2007 but he tendered his resignation when new chairman Ijaz Butt took charge.

“Due to the ongoing Pentangular Cup we could not meet the players and now the best time available for us to have a meeting with them is Karachi where they will assemble to leave for the Abu Dhabi series,” Yawar told Dawn.

“The selected team will also undergo a two-day camp on Nov 7 and 8, before leaving for Abu Dhabi the next day,” Yawar added.

“Though I, along with Intikhab Alam [new coach], held a meeting with captain [Shoaib Malik] in Lahore which lasted more than two hours, a meeting with the players is also necessary; so we have selected Nov 7 for this,” Yawar stated.

Yawar revealed that the meeting with Malik was very fruitful as it gave an opportunity to read his mind, adding that Malik expressed his viewpoint on certain aspects of handling the team for turning them into a united bunch.

“Every captain has his own ideas to deal with players and so Malik has too and there were some good recommendations from him,” he added.

Without disclosing any of Malik’s suggestions, Yawar said it was agreed in the meeting that all steps would be taken to retain discipline at all costs.

“Our slogan is ‘one for all and all for one’, and this can create a spirit among the players to perform well under difficult conditions,” Yawar stated.

Commenting on maverick fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar, who had been involved in various cases of indiscipline in the past, Yawar said he as manager had toured with the fast bowler in 2001 without any trouble.

“In fact, all the players of a team cannot have similar mind and attitude, you have to deal with them separately,” he said. “A code of conduct is already there for the players and it only needs to be implemented,” said Yawar whose Abu Dhabi’s assignment as manager will be the 15th of his career.

Asked if he would mention all indiscipline incidents of players in his tour report, Yawar looked more firm, saying: “I will first prefer to take action on the spot which is more important, because a timely action can save the team from real damage.”

Yawar added that he would like to be the first person who should be held accountable if any player escaped free for any act of indiscipline.

Praising the players, Yawar said they all were talented and could improve with more mental toughness and guidance.
