SUKKUR: Centre for Disabled children in a shambles

SUKKUR, Oct 28: The building of the Centre for Rehabilitation of Disabled Children is in a shambles as no repair and maintenance work has been carried out since long by the quarters concerned.

The centre was established in a building on Bunder Road here in 1986 by the then city mayor Noor-ud-din Shaikh for rehabilitation of disabled children belonging to upper Sindh. It aimed at providing education, technical training and physical and medical aid to disabled children. At that time, 40 children were registered and 18 officials were posted to run the centre.

Presently, only five children are registered with the centre as due to dilapidated condition of the building, parents hesitate to register their children here. The parents prefer to send their children to private institutions for technical education and physiotherapy.

The in-charge of the centre, Abdul Quddus Memon, told this correspondent that the repair work of hostel and offices was started by the district government last year but it could not be completed due to lapse of funds.

He said that most of the staff of the centre had been transferred to Darul Aman, EDO office and other offices of the district government of Sukkur.

He said that despite correspondence for rehabilitation of the centre with the district government and building and works department but to no avail.

He called upon the authorities of social welfare department to allocate of funds for repair and maintenance work of the centre.
