Fresh FIR of Oct 18 attack registered

KARACHI, Oct 17: Police have registered a fresh FIR of the bomb attack on the welcoming procession of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto in Karsaz area of the city on October 18 last year.

The FIR was lodged by the Bahadurabad police station under Sections 324, 302, 427/34 of the Pakistan Penal Code and Sections 3 and 4 of the Explosive Substances Act, 1908.

More than 150 people lost their lives and over 400 others were injured in the attack on the rally held to welcome the former prime minister and PPP chief when she returned home from over eight years of self-exile.

AFP adds: Police said they would question two former spy chiefs and a prominent politician over the deadly bombing.

The three to be questioned are Ijaz Shah, then chief of the Intelligence Bureau, Hameed Gul, former chief of Inter-Services Intelligence, and Pervez Elahi, then chief minister of Punjab.

Police had initially refused to entertain Benazir Bhutto’s allegations but were now doing so after a court order, Sohail Chattha, a senior police official, said.
