KARACHI: Trader, two women killed in violent acts

KARACHI, Oct 14: Three people, including two women, were killed on Tuesday in acts of violence in different parts of the city, police and witnesses said.

They said that a 35-year-old woman, mother of three, was shot dead by her husband’s younger brother at her flat in Gulistan-i-Jauhar.

The Sharea Faisal police said that they had arrested and booked Jalil Ahmed for killing his sister-in-law, Elizabeth, wife of Azmat, at her ground floor flat.

They said that the suspect appeared to be mentally unstable. The police said that the victim’s husband was a driver by profession in Dubai, and the suspect lived with his brother’s family.

The body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for a postmortem examination.

Sources at the hospital’s medico-legal section told Dawn that the victim was shot to the head from a point-blank range as the bullet pierced the skull.

The family hailed from the NWFP.

Shopkeeper shot dead

A 24-year-old man was shot dead by bandits at his shop in Bolton Market, which is situated a few yards away from the Kharadar police station.

Witnesses said that two bandits came at the artificial flowers shop of Samar Iqbal, son of Mohammed Yousuf, at around 11am and held the victim hostage at gunpoint.

They said that the dacoits became jittery and one of them opened fire when the victim struggled with them.

The police said that the culprits ran away after killing the young man.

The body was shifted to Civil Hospital for a postmortem examination.

Sources at the hospital’s medico-legal section told Dawn that the victim, a resident of Golimar, received a single but fatal bullet wound to the abdomen.

Body found

The partially decomposed body of a woman in her mid 30s was found at a desolate place near Chakra Hotel off Super Highway.

The Sohrab Goth police shifted the body to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for a postmortem examination.

Hospital sources said that the victim’s throat was slit. They said that the body was at least a week old.

The body was later kept at the Edhi morgue for want of identification.

Traffic cop run over

A 45-year-old traffic cop was run over by a fast-moving truck while he was controlling traffic at Mirza Adam Khan Chowk in Baghdadi.

The Kalri police said the unknown driver of the truck fled the scene abandoning his vehicle after crushing Fateh Mohammed Khan to death.

The DIG of traffic police, Wajid Durrani, told Dawn that the body was dispatched to the victim’s hometown in Jhelum. He said that the police department had initially given Rs50,000 to the victim’s family for transporting the body and burial.

The police have registered a case against the unknown driver and mounted a search for him.

Woman killed

A 28-year-old woman was knocked down by a hit-and-run truck on Maripur near Machhar Colony.

The Mauripur police said the victim was crossing the road when a fast-moving truck hit her. She died instantly, they said.

The body was shifted to Civil Hospital where the deceased was identified as Mehnaz, daughter of Mansoor Shah, a resident of Moach Goth, Baldia Town.

The police said that the woman was on her way back home after visiting a relative in Machhar Colony.
