KARACHI: Guard commits suicide in bank
By Our Staff Reporter
KARACHI, Oct 8: A 42-year-old security guard of the National Police Foundation committed suicide in the small hours of Wednesday by shooting himself in the head at a branch of the United Bank in Ferozabad.
The police said Shakir, son of Aqeel, a resident of Landhi and father of two, was posted at the UBL’s Nursery branch off Sharea Faisal.
They said the security guard placed the back of his repeater in his lap and pulled the trigger.
The police said the victim was found dead in the morning when one of the staffers opened the bank for the day. They said nothing was found missing from the bank.
The police quoted the victim’s family as telling the inquest officer that the security guard had been under immense stress for the past few days.
The family, they said, however did not know the reasons that led to the suicide.
The police said the body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for a postmortem examination.
Sources at the JPMC’s medico-legal section told Dawn that the victim had shot himself in the throat and had died instantly.
Young man shot dead
A 20-year-old man was shot dead at Qayyumabad, a shantytown behind Al-Asif Square at Sohrab Goth.
The police said unknown culprits opened fire on Bilal Khan, son of Mengal Khan, near his house and fled the scene, leaving behind the victim fatally wounded.
They said the victim died before he could be taken to hospital.
Later, the body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for a postmortem examination.
Sources at the hospital’s medico-legal department told Dawn that the victim received three bullets in the upper torso from a very close range as the bullets pierced through the body.
The police registered a murder case (FIR 598/08) against unknown culprits under Section 302 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of the victim’s father.
Mengal Khan reported to the police that his son was shot dead by unknown culprits for unknown reasons.
They said the complainant did not nominate anybody in the FIR.
However, they suspected that the murder was motivated by a personal enmity.
The police said that the victim was an Afghan national and had earned a reputation of being a rakehell in the locality mainly inhabited by Afghanis.
