PESHAWAR: Another camp to be set up for IDPs at Jalozai

By Zulfiqar Ali

PESHAWAR, Oct 6: Authorities decided to set up another relief camp for the internally displaced people of Bajaur tribal region and Darra Adamkhel at Jalozai near Nowshera amid exodus from the conflict hit areas, a senior official said.

The decision regarding establishment of another relief camp was taken in a meeting held here at the office of the regional coordination officer on Monday. RCO Arbab Shah Rukh Khan, Provincial Relief Commissioner Jamil Amjad, Afghan Refugees Commissioner Sayed Jamalluddin and senior officials of the home department attended the meeting.

Jamalluddin told Dawn that about 1,000 tents would be erected at Jalozai which was vacated from the Afghan refugees about five months ago. He said that work on the camp at Jalozai would be started in next few days.

He said that decision was taken keeping in view flow of the displaced people.

He said that 800 families were being accommodated at Kacha Garhi camp in Peshawar where 634 displaced families consisting of 3,777 individuals had been settled so far and more IDPs were coming. Teams comprising officials of the Commissionerate and UNHCR have been set up to register IDPs at the camp.

The Kacha Garhi camp, which was deserted after relocation of Afghan refugees last year, has become a hub of activities after the arrival of the IDPs. The buildings lying in ruins in the sprawling camp are being repaired and renovated where different relief organisations and NGOs are planning to establish their offices. Various UN bodies and their partners have launched activities inside the camp. Land is being leveled to erect more tents for the IDPs.

Management of the relief camps in the province has been handed over to the Afghan Commissionerate to coordinate relief activities inside the camps while provincial relief commission would look after the overall operation.
