KARACHI: Steps to mitigate people’s sufferings pledged
KARACHI, Oct 5: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah has reaffirmed the resolve to mitigate sufferings of the masses and improve the quality of the common man’s life through the five-point programme being implemented by the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).
Chairing a meeting of the PPP’s Karachi division, Mr Shah, who is also the provincial chief of the party, said that the programme was aimed at bringing about economic and social uplift. “This will enable the country to make rapid progress in all sectors,” he added.
The meeting unanimously adopted a resolution expressing confidence in the leadership of Syed Qaim Ali Shah.
PPP members of the National and Sindh assemblies from Karachi, as well as the party’s divisional and district office-bearers attended the meeting, which was held at the Chief Minister’s House on Saturday night.
The meeting discussed the party’s organisational matters and other issues.
Mr Shah paid tribute to Benazir Bhutto for sacrificing her life for the cause of democracy, and said it was the great sacrifice that enabled the party to emerge successful in the recent general elections. He was also appreciative of the party workers who remained steadfast during the PPP’s sustained struggle for the restoration of democracy in the country under the leadership of Benazir Bhutto. He expressed his confidence that all party members would work with the same zeal and zest under the leadership of PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari.
The meeting condemned the suicide bomb attack targeted at the Awami National Party leader, Asfandyar Wali Khan, in Charsadda a couple of days back. It expressed solidarity with ANP chief, who escaped unhurt in the attack.
Leader of the House in the Senate Mian Raza Rabbani, General-Secretary of Sindh PPP Nafees Siddiqui, Taj Haider, PPP city chief Faisal Raza Abidi, Adviser Rashid Rabbani and Special Assistant Syed Waqar Medhi were among those present at the meeting.
According to a statement issued after the meeting, a monument would be constructed at the site of the October 18, 2007 blasts at Karsaz. A large number of people, most of them PPP workers and supporters, were killed and injured when a big rally organised to welcome Benazir Bhutto on her return home was attacked with bombs at Karsaz.
The foundation stone of the monument would be laid on the first anniversary of the tragic incident, said the statement.—APP
