Wang clinches World Cup
LIEGE (Belgium), Sept 29: Men’s world number one Wang Hao of China won the World Cup table tennis championships here on Sunday, beating Germany’s Timo Boll in the final.
Wang beat Boll, ranked seventh in the world, by 4 sets to 1 (11-8, 11-3, 14-16, 11-7, 11-9).
This annual event is considered the third most prestigious men’s singles trophy behind the Olympics and biennial world championships.
Results:
Final: Wang Hao (China) bt Timo Boll (Germany) 4-1 (11-8, 11-3, 14-16, 11-7, 11-9).
3rd place playoff: Ma Long (China) bt Kalinikos Kreanga (Greece) 4-1 (7-11, 11-6, 11-5, 11-6, 11-8).
Semi-finals: Wang Hao (China) bt Kalinikos Kreanga (Greece) 4-2 (11-7, 5-11, 7-11, 11-5, 11-6, 11-6); Timo Boll (Germany) bt Ma Long (China) 4-3 (11-7, 8-11, 9-11, 3-11, 11-8, 11-6).—AFP
