UN puts off Decision on security

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Sept 27: The United Nations system in Pakistan has deferred a decision on raising the security level for Islamabad till after Eid.

The United Nations is likely to increase the security level for the city to Level 3 over fears of terrorist attacks following the Marriott bombing. The city is currently at Level 2 on the UN threat alert system.

A source at the UN in Islamabad told Dawn that officials at a security review meeting held on Friday could not take a final decision because of differences over the issue.

He said that UN’s Pakistan chief Fikret Akcura and most of UN agencies’ heads were not in favour of increasing the security level, but security officials and headquarters of UN agencies pressed for the move.

Going by rules, the source said, Level 3 was warranted.

Islamabad was first placed at Level 3 after the 9/11 suicide attacks in the United States in 2001.
