SHIKARPUR, Sept 27: The Sindh Minister for Local Bodies, Agha Siraj Durrani, said that the government was determined to provide basic amenities to the people at their doorsteps and all out efforts would be made to complete the mission of the late Benazir Bhutto for the welfare of the masses.

Talking to reporters at an Iftar dinner hosted by Circle Officer, Anti-corruption Establishment, Shikarpur, Abdul Wahid Buriro, at the Gymkhana here, he said that the provincial government was creating job opportunities for the unemployed youth both in the public and the private sectors.

Responding to a query regarding the fate of the local government system, the minister said that the former president, Pervez Musharraf, had given the system in question a constitutional shelter that would continue till 2009.

“We have sent proposals to the federal government to put the matter before the parliament for its discontinuation because it has failed to achieve development targets,” he said adding that instead the system had helped flourish corruption culture through nazims.

Speaking about the law and order situation in the province and particularly in Shikarpur district, Mr Durrani claimed that the Sindh government was using all legal and moral resources to control the adverse law and order situation, which was deteriorated by the previous non-democratic government.

But now the situation had improved to a great extent, he claimed.

The minister said that some influential persons were still sheltering criminals.

Responding to a query regarding the current hike in prices of essential commodities, the minister claimed that durable policies were being formulated to face the shortage of wheat and to discourage its smuggling.
