FAISALABAD, Sept 27: Two children were killed and four other family members injured when three criminals hurled hand-grenades on the house of a lawyer over an old enmity in Chak 101-GB in the precincts of Jaranwala Sadar police early on Saturday.

Proclaimed offender Shaukat Ali along with accomplices attacked the house of advocate Zahid Pervaiz and hurled two hand-grenades. Zahid’s three-year-old son Jawwad and five-year-old daughter Wajeeha died on the spot. Zahid, his mother Shamim Bibi, wife Zahida and nephew Ali Raza, 18, sustained injuries.

The injured were taken to hospital. The assailants also resorted to indiscriminate fire, creating panic in the locality.

Meanwhile, the District Bar Association and the Jaranwala Bar Association observed a token strike against the incident and did not appear before any court after 11am. The two bars also demanded early arrest of the criminals.

DSP Malik Khalid told newsmen that a case had been registered against Shaukat, Anwar, Nawaz and accomplices.

TRADERS’ DEMO: Scores of Traders staged a demonstration and blocked Jhang Road for two hours on Saturday in protest against police failure to arrest the burglars who had deprived Sadhar vegetable market president of Rs4 million and injured his brother on Wednesday.

Traders, who closed their businesses, chanted slogans against the police and blocked Jhang Road, demanding the arrest of robbers who looted Mian Awais and injured his brother Shabbir Ahmad near (Jhang Road) bypass.

Following the incident, the infuriated traders had given a protest call for Thursday. However, after a meeting with Regional Police Officer Abdul Majeed they had delayed their protest plan for one day. The RPO had assured them the outlaws would be arrested soon.

The traders, including Mahmoodul Hasan, Rizwan Siddique and Imtiaz Rabbani, gave a 24-hour deadline for the arrest of criminals. They also expressed concern over the law and order situation.

They said police had been doing nothing to protect people against criminals, though the government was spending millions for the purpose.

They said they would keep intensifying their protest till the arrest of outlaws, adding they would stage a sit-in on Jhang Road on Monday.

Protestors dispersed peacefully when they were again assured by police that culprits would soon be arrested as some clues had been found.
