THATTA, Sept 26: Pakistan People’s Party MPA Humera Alwani, while criticising the alleged corruption and mismanagement in the district works and communications department, has called for concrete steps for improving the performance of the department.

Talking to journalists here on Friday, she said that recently the building department Thatta had invited through the print media around 70 tenders for maintenance and repair work for the financial year 2007-08.

She alleged that of the total 70 only 40 ‘favourite’ contractors were issued technical sanctions and work estimates by the relevant department and rest of the contractors were refused on the pretext of non-availability of funds.

Had the department been facing a financial crunch, how it could advertise above 70 works and collected tender fee in that regard, she said.

The MPA alleged that since 2002, no deposit receipt of tender fee record had been maintained causing financial losses to the national exchequer.
