Two held in connection with Marriott blast

By Our Staff Correspondent

FAISALABAD, Sept 24: Two activists of the proscribed Lashkar-i-Jhangvi organisation were arrested from the Ada Muridwala area in connection with the Marriott Hotel suicide bombing, informed sources told Dawn on Wednesday.

The sources said that security personnel, believed to be from Islamabad, raided a public call office in Muridwala and detained M. Ilyas of Chak 197-GB and another man who was not identified.

They also said that local police were not involved in the operation and the arrested men had been moved to an unspecified place.

Town Police Officer Sadar Zulfiqar Ahmed told Dawn he was unaware of any operation or arrest.

The police officer said the police had come to know about the operation through the media.

AP adds: Meanwhile, a militant group that claimed responsibility for the bombing of the Marriott Hotel threatened to carry out more attacks.

The warning came in a cell-phone message sent to reporters.

“All those who will facilitate Americans and Nato crusaders ... will keep on receiving the blows,” said the message from the group calling itself Fedayeen-i-Islam.
