KHAR, Sept 23: Two major tribes of Bajaur Agency decided on Tuesday to take up arms against Taliban and help restore the government’s writ in the area, after 14 militants and two soldiers were killed in fresh clashes.

Elders and ulema of Therkhani and Utmankhel tribes held a jirga in Khar and decided to take on anti-state elements and militants and support the military operation.

Elders of Salarzai tribe, which is already waging a campaign against the militants, also attended the jirga.

“This is our territory. We will not allow any person or organisation to create disturbance in Bajaur in the name of Islam and jihad,” the elders said. The Taliban had caused widespread destruction in the area and were the worst enemies of local people and the country, they added.

They urged the government to continue the military operation till the elimination of all militants and restoration of the state’s writ. The jirga demanded expulsion of all Afghans from the area, alleging that they were involved in criminal activities.

Assistant Political Agent Mohammad Jamil also addressed the jirga.

Meanwhile, officials said at least 14 militants were killed and 20 others injured in clashes with security forces in Rashakai on Monday and Tuesday.

Sources said two soldiers were killed and five injured in the clashes.

At least five militants were killed when security forces destroyed their vehicle.

Planes and helicopters pounded militants’ positions in Banda, Rashakai, Charmang and Kausar.
