Twinky kicks dust in rivals’ eyes to win at LRC
By Aftab Gilani
LAHORE, Sept 21: Fancied three-year-old filly Twinky kicked dust into the her 17 opponents’ eyes to achieve the rare feat of wining a race on her debut during the 3rd Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.
Striding like a mature runner, Twinky, the daughter of Bedouin Invader, owned by Mian Maahir Ahmad, trained by Abdul Rasheed and ridden by jockey Shahid Rehman beat the gelding Rough Tough easily by two and a half lengths.
The filly Sapna and the colt Brave Heart completed the frame. The Karachi Plate, Class VI, division I was the third race of the day. The winner clocked a fast time of 52 2/5 seconds over the sprinting distance of 800 metres.A long shot five-year-old chestnut, Chan, ridden by A. Imran, turned out to be a champion horse when running with a high-class field of sprinters to land the feature event, the Barisal Plate, Class IV, contested over 1,000 metres.
He beat the odds on favourite colt Desert Prince (ridden by Javed Iqbal) by over two lengths to prove his mettle.
Lucky Cat and Miss Liza completed the board. Nine ran for the sixth and last event.
A race earlier, even money favourite colt Victory Hero galloped to edge out chestnut Chinkara by a head on the finishing line to bag the fifth and supporting event, run over 1,000 metres. The race was very closely contested and enjoyed by race fans to see the first three horses finishing with in the distance of half a length. This was Victory Hero’s second back to back victory.
In the second race, the well-backed filly Victory Gallop fractured her leg and took a fall while also bringing down her rider Majid Ali. Susequently two other horses -- Last Option and Kamla -- collided with the fallen Victory Gallop and their riders too fell down. Riding boy Majid Ali fell unconscious and was taken to hospital where he was provided medical aid.
The Lahore Race club (LRC) steward Khawaja M. Arif advised the LRC secretary Shahzad Akhtar to provide medical treatment to the injured rider while also sanctioning a Rs5,000 grant for him.
The punters had a fine day when four favourites obliged them in a card of six races. They were: Dream Memories (even money), Twinky (60 to 100), Shock Wave (even money) and Victory Hero (even money) in the first, third, fourth and fifth race, respectively. Dam Dama Dam and Chan were rank outsiders in the second and sixth race.
