Al Jazeera airs video of abducted journalists

CAIRO, Sept 17: Al-Jazeera TV network has aired a short video clip showing two journalists, a Canadian and an Australian, who have been abducted and held hostage by Somali extremists for nearly a month.

Canadian Amanda Lindhout and Australian freelance photographer Nigel Brennan appeared in the video to appeal to their governments to work for their release, the Qatar-based Al-Jazeera said.

The video was aired on Tuesday. The kidnappers, according to the Qatar-based TV network, are members of the so-called Mujahedeen of Somalia, which accuses the governments of Australia and Canada of “contributing to the destruction of Somalia.”

The pair were kidnapped on August 23, along with their Somali driver and two Somali guards while travelling to Elasha, 18 kilometres from Mogadishu.—AP
