GUJRANWALA, Sept 15: The Sugar Dealers Association has refused to provide sugar at the price fixed by the government and also threatened to stop the supply if magistrates continue crackdown on them.

The district administration has fixed the sugar price at Rs31 per kg in the open market while the shopkeepers are selling it at Rs33 per kg.

Association president Muhammad Nasim said that mill owners had increased the sugar price during Ramazan and it was not possible for dealers and shopkeepers to provide sugar at official rates.

He said the association had suggested the district administration to fix the sugar price at Rs33 per kg, but it did not agree to the proposal.

Meanwhile, raiding parties of the district administration, led by magistrates, have reportedly imposed heavy fines on dealers and shopkeepers for not selling sugar at official rates.

COP SHOT DEAD: Unidentified car riders shot dead a constable and injured a head-constable seriously in Kamoki on Monday.

This is the third incident within a span of two months in the Gujranwala region in which five policemen, including a sub-inspector, have been shot to death. Reports reaching here said that constable Kamran and head-constable Ghulam Rasool of Special Branch, Gujranwala, were going on their motorcycle when they were attacked. As a result, the former died on the spot while the latter sustained injuries. He was admitted to the DHQ Hospital, Gujranwala, in a critical condition.

CONDEMNED: Trade union workers on Monday staged a rally on the GT Road to protest incessant attacks on tribal areas by the Nato forces.

The rally, led by Mushtaq Badil, Shaukat Bhatti, Javed Masood, Mohsin Butt, Shafiq Khokhar, Ashraf Bhutta advocate and Faiz Dar, criticized the US for interfering in the affairs of Pakistan.

The rally was started from Sheranwala Bagh and terminated at Gondlanwala Chowk after passing through the GT Road. Carrying banners and placards, the demonstrators chanted slogans against the US and its allies.

RESULTS: The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Gujranwala, announced on Monday the results of intermediate Part-I annual examination 2008 on Monday.

Board chairman Akram Chaudhry said that out of 73,665 candidates appeared in the examination 29,249 were declared successful showing a pass percentage of 39.71.
