The Conqueror establishes authority at Racecourse

By Anwar Zuberi

KARACHI, Sept 14: Favourite The Conqueror galloped to a facile five lengths’ victory to land the feature event in the absence of filly Moomal who along with three other horses was withdrawn in the Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

The Conqueror who was installed favourite after jockey Shabbir replaced Lateef led from the front to post an emphatic win. He edged past Taizper for the honours.

Desert Hawk finished third four lengths behind while Star Of Galaxy completed the board.

Earlier, four horses pre-favourite Moomal, Captain Black, Manan Prince and Sahibzadi were withdrawn leaving seven runners in fray.

In an earlier race, four-year-old bay colt Ace Of Base lived up to his top billing storming to two lengths’ victory over filly Black Velvet to make it two on the trot.

The two were chased by Blind Date and Reyan The Great.

The first three races also ended in a blaze of glory for favourites — Victory Prince, Silver City and Mushki.

Outsiders reigned supreme in the remaining two races which raised quite a few eyebrows.

Three-year-old bay colt Hilal Tob with no form worth created quite a stir when he landed the fourth race under riding boy A. Qayyum. He outpaced Trust Again by five lengths to register his maiden win.

In the next, Dilruba was opened favourite and was backed by the racing public. Suddenly, Play Boy came under heavy betting and eventually won beating John Player by two-and-a-half lengths. Dilruba even failed to finish on the board.

The next Gymkhana race meeting will be held on Saturday.
