Tinker Bell wins again at the LRC
By Aftab Gilani
LAHORE, Sept 14: Fancied bay filly Tinker Bell, stormed home to win the class six handicap race gone over the sprinting distance of 900 metres to make it a two-in-a-row during the second Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.
The three-year-old filly owned jointly by Mian Maahir Ahmad/Mahmood Khan and trained by Abdul Rasheed simply crushed her opponents while landing a runaway success with a fast timing of 56 3/5 seconds over the dust track.
The powerful daughter of Bedouin Invader out-of-Nagan, Tinker Bell blitz down the straight chase held by jockey Shahid Rehman with a length to spare over her long chaser, the chestnut Harry Can Run. The gelding, Rough Tough finished third with the grey gelding Blue Fire fourth among the 13 runners.
Midway through the proceeding, the Racecourse district received heavy rains for nearly half-an-hour, wetting the track. But the rain did not deter the race club authorities to go through the remaining races and the whole card was seen through on the wet going.
The feature and the last event, the September cup run over 1,200 metres was won by the four-to-one shot grey filly Lucky Cat, who beat the 30-to-100 favourite colt Cut Throat. Leading all the way, Lucky Cat trained by Haji Fazal Hadi registered a five-lengths’ victory over the much talked about prodigy from a foreign bloodline Cut Throat, who ran hopelessly poor.
Secret Memories and Harry Can View completed the frame among the eight runners.
Only two favourites -- Tinker Bell and Majestic Desert -- won in a card of six events.
Three-year-old filly Majestic Desert, who was beaten on her last Sunday’s over 1,000 metres outing, ran differently in the over 1,100 metres race today. In a scintillating burst of speed, she beat Chinkara by six lengths under the same rider.
The long-shot bay colt Victory Hero, was another long shot for the fourth race but he beat Big Bird by over four lengths while the favourite bay filly Royal Deal finished third.
Red-roan filly So Romantic caused the biggest upset of the day in the second race. The filly owned and trained by Mian Javaid was totally un-backed in the betting ring. She beat another outsider filly Aaja Bulbul by a head in a photo-finish verdict. The favourite bay horse Unter finished third, two lengths further behind. Yet another well-backed filly, Last Option completed the frame.
