By Our Staff Reporter
ISLAMABAD, Sept 14: Democracy is a universal value based on free expression of people’s will to determine their own political, economic, social and cultural system and their full participation in all aspects of life, according to Acting President Dr Fehmida Mirza.
In a message on the International Democracy Day being observed on Monday, she said: “In order to achieve this objective, it is incumbent upon the political leadership to shun their political differences and join hands to strengthen the democratic process.” Stressing the need for promoting democratisation and development of the political system, she said that democracy, peace, development and respect for human rights were inter-dependent and, therefore, it was imperative for democracy to flourish.
According to her, people’s involvement in public affairs ensured basic freedoms and equality, fulfilling their needs and preserving or restoring peace.
She said that the ultimate goal of democracy was to preserve and promote the dignity and fundamental rights of the individuals, to achieve social justice, foster economic and social development; strengthen social cohesion and build a propitious environment for international peace.
She said that continuous electoral process ensures a democratic dispensation.
