LAHORE, Sept 14: A seven-month pregnant woman succumbed to her burns in Mayo Hospital on Sunday morning few hours after her husband and in-laws had set her ablaze allegedly over some domestic issues in Gulshan Shalimar Scheme, Baghbanpura.

The Shalimar police said Naseem Bibi, 25, of Bhatta Chowk, had married Arshad a year ago. Arshad dealt in washroom liquid cleaners and hired girls for packing purposes.

The accused used to tease workers on which many of them left the job soon after their joining. Naseem frequently asked her husband to mend his ways, but he paid no heed.

On the day of incident, both the spouses had an argument and later Arshad, his father Abdul Rashid and mother Rasheedan Bibi doused Naseem with kerosene oil and set her ablaze. Arshad and his father later fled.

Neighbours heard Naseem screaming and informed the police. She was taken to Mayo Hospital where she expired on Sunday morning.

Shalimar Circle SPO Rana Azeem told Dawn that police had registered a case against Arshad, his father and mother on the complaint of victim’s brother Nazir.

“We have taken Arshad’s mother into custody but she did not tell any specific motive behind the incident,” he added. The body was sent for autopsy.

The victim was identified as 38-year-old Zulfiqar, of Takkia Huri Shah, near Lahore Hotel.

Imran Butt, a neighbour, had reprimanded and thrashed Zulfiqar’s nephew Noman on Sept 13 after Noman and Imran’s nephews quarreled with each other. However, elders of the area intervened and resolved the matter.

On the day of incident, Ramzan, father of Noman, returned from Dubai.

In the afternoon, Ramzan met Imran and asked him as to why he had thrashed his son. Imran misbehaved with him and ran away.

Later, he along with his brother Rehan and an accomplice Shahbaz approached Ramzan and Zulfiqar, shot at them and fled.

Zulfiqar and Ramzan were rushed to a local hospital where Zulfiqar succumbed to his wounds. The police registered a case.

ACCIDENT: A 10-year-old boy sustained injuries when a speeding auto rickshaw turned turtle near Kalma Chowk on Sunday.

An Edhi ambulance shifted the injured later identified as Asghar Ali to Lahore General Hospital.

In another incident, three people sustained injuries when a bus hit a car near Rahat Bakers in Cantonment on Sunday.

FIRE: Raw cotton worth Rs4 million reduced to ashes when a fire broke out in a spinning mill near Railway Crossing on Raiwind Road on Sunday.

Rescue 1122 fire-fighters controlled the fire which erupted owing to short-circuiting.
