Tinker Bell, the day’s best proposition in Lahore races

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Sept 13: Three-year-old filly Tinker Bell will be on the trot to touch victory once again, when a six event card gets underway during the second Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.

Tinker Bell, the filly from Bedouin Invader out-of-Nagan, opened her new season’s campaign on a triumphant note, winning the first cup named after war hero Major Tufail Mohammad Shaheed last Sunday.

Owned jointly by Mian Maahir Ahmad and Mahmood Khan, Tinker Bell is trained by Abdul Rasheed and was given a brilliant ride by jockey Shahid Rehman on her maiden success.

She is contesting in the third race, the Jhang Plate, class VI, division I to go over the sprinting distance of 900 metres. Harry Can Run, Rough Tough and Mutajir can fight for the places. In the field of 14 runners, Tinker Bell is the fastest sprinter, hence our day’s best proposition.

There are eight runners barring last-minute withdrawals in the feature event, the September Cup, a class IV, division III handicap race to be contested over 1,200 metres. Three of them, namely, Cut Throat, Lucky Cat and Born To Win are on chance.

The three-year-old colt Cut Throat has been a great disappointment for owner Syed Tasweer Hussain this season. He was beaten by Velocity and should make amends this time and win the race. The colt is trained by Sohail Aziz, who is often seen worried due to his dismal performance. Perhaps the race was run on too fast a pace and he failed to pick up last Sunday. This will be the sixth and last race of the day.

Royal Deal, Big Bird and Victory Hero are the pick of the dozen contestants in the fourth race, the Samasatta Plate, Class V, division II race run over the sprinting distance of over 1,100 metres.

Three-year-old filly Royal Deal, a daughter of Shogun out-of-Royal Market is in top form having to her credit two back-to-back victories. She will be on the trot to make it a three-in-a-row, a distinction achieved by only a few. Victory Hero, Big Bird and Bold Act will fight for the less remunerative positions. This will be the fourth race of the day.

The fifth race, Samasatta Plate, class V, Division I to go over 1,100 metres has the tiny field of seven acceptors, if there are no last-minute withdrawals. Majestic Desert, who was placed second on Sunday last should avenge the defeat to live up to expectations. Chinakara looks good for the place.

The second race has the biggest field of 16 runners, if they all face the starter. On form Sohna Billoo, Victory King and Dream Memories look good and on pedigree Thanks For Nothing comes on bloodline but so far she had nothing to present her owner. The speed and stamina of all the four will be put to test in the race to be contested over 900 metres. The gelding Sohna Billoo seems the fastest of them all.

The first race is composed mostly of such runners, who have come down in the handicap after winning a race or are off form. It is extremely difficult to assess their capabilities in the absence of any concrete form evidence. Pakeeza looks good on bloodline and Little Smile, Dogar Gift and Meri Arzoo on recent outings.

A card of six events, three to be contested over 900 metres, two over 1,100 metres and one over 1,200 metres has been drawn for the day. The first race will be held at 2.00pm.
