Alitalia faces bankruptcy

Published September 14, 2008

ROME, Sept 13: Failing Italian airline Alitalia cannot guarantee any flights after Sunday because of lack of fuel, special administrator Augusto Fantozzi reportedly warned on Saturday as bankruptcy loomed.

“Up to Sunday we have guaranteed flights, but not on Monday because no-one will supply us with kerosene,” Fantozzi said, according to union sources quoted by Italian news agencies.

The sources also quoted him as saying as many as 12 aircraft could be grounded as early as Saturday, and that with no agreement with the nine Alitalia unions to save the airline, he would be obliged to start dismissal procedures. Fantozzi denied he had been so alarmist but acknowledged that “there are risks of supply difficulties.”—AFP
