50MW wind farm planned in Sindh

ISLAMABAD, Sept 12: Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) would facilitate expeditious setting up of renewable energy projects in line with government’s policy of promoting the use of renewable energy in the country’s power generation mix, said board’s chief executive officer Mr Arif Alauddin.

He was talking to the senior executives of Makwind Power Private Ltd (MPPL) that had been issued a Letter of Intent for the setting up of 50MW wind farm.

AED is striving to facilitate generation of 700MW through wind by 2010 as part of mid-term development framework.

MPPL would establish a wind farm comprising 33 turbines each of 1.5MW near Nooriabad in Sindh.

The wind farm would be set up on land obtained through private sources rather than on land leased from Sindh Government, which is the usual practice for such projects. The company would be using European technology for power generation.

The principal sponsors of the project are Al-Tariq Constructors (Pvt) Ltd, who have for the past 30 years been engaged with electricity and petro-chemical projects.

China National Machinery and Equipment Import and Export Corporation (CMEC), an international engineering contracting firm is the co-sponsor and EPC and O&M contractor for the project.

According to the management of the project, entire financing for the project would be obtained from overseas sources.
