Lighting Muqeem wins LRC feature event with lightning speed

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Sept 10: Fancied bay filly Lighting Muqeem outclassed her 11 opponents to win the feature event, a class VI division I and II handicap race run over 1,100 metres during the midweek Lahore Gymkhana races at the Racecourse on Wednesday.

The 40 to 100 favourite daughter of Shershah, Lighting Muqeem, ridden by

Jockey Aamir Parvaiz, beat chestnut Sohna Billoo by six-and-a-half lengths.

Victory King and Victory Gallop completed the frame.

The filly trained by Sohail Aziz picked up speed soon after the start and led all the way home to register her maiden success in this sixth and last race of the day.

A race earlier saw bay mare Scarlet Empress coming up from behind to win the supporting event, contested over 1,100 metres. The three to two favourite Scarlet Empress piloted by Khalil Vickey and also trained by Sohail Aziz beat rank outsider bay gelding Grace Glamour by three lengths. Geo Bhakkar and Meri Arzoo made up the frame among 13 runners.

The best performer of the day was the four-year-old red roan mare Luka Toni, who virtually flew away from start to finish in the third race. It was the first career win for the mare in his four outings. She beat Changer by a distance. Client and Pure Power completed the board among the 10 runners.

The champion trainer Sohail Aziz distinguished himself when he sent out two winners — Scarlet Empress and Lighting Muqeem — in the fifth and sixth race, respectively.

The bay filly Sana My Love sprang a big surprise by winning the second race. She beat Book Bet by six lengths.

Wednesday turned out a lucky day for the connections of three fillies, namely, Sana My Love, Luka Toni and Lighting Muqeem registering their career’s first success.

Only three favourites won in a card of six events.
