RAWALPINDI, Sept 8: A prisoner, who sustained critical head injuries under mysterious circumstances in Adiala jail, died in the District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ) on Monday, hospital authorities said.

Ghulam Haider, aged between 77 and 80, had been serving 25 years imprisonment in a murder case since 2004. He sustained head injuries last Thursday and was subsequently shifted to the DHQ hospital where he died on Monday.

His grandson, Ghulam Ali, alleged that his grandfather was tortured by his rivals who were also in jail. However, the jail authorities claimed that Haider was injured after he slipped in the toilet of the prison.

Ghulam Ali, while quoted the last words of Ghulam Haider spoken to his son who was in jail with him, said he had been subjected to brutal torture.

The medical board, which was to carry out the postmortem, had been constituted at the DHQ hospital.
