AG begins probe into SAU affairs

Bureau Report

HYDERABAD, Sept 6: The talks between the Sindh Advocate General, Yusuf Leghari, who was appointed as inquiry officer by the Sindh Governor to probe into the affairs of Sindh Agriculture University Tandojam and the leaders of the employees action committee remained inconclusive.

Mr Leghari, who reached the university on Saturday, met with the university vice chancellor, Dr Basheer Ahmed Shaikh and other officials and later visited the employees’ protest camp where he was received with the slogans of “We don’t want Basheer Shaikh”.

Later, he held negotiations with the leaders of the employees action committee, Hussain Bux Veesar, Karam Ali Punnu, Syed Abdul Majeed Shah Rashidi and others in the office of the dean of crop production faculty.

The leaders of the action committee at the first instance refused to talk on any other issue except the removal of the vice chancellor.

On the assurance by the Advocate General that he would conduct an impartial inquiry, other issues were also discussed but the talks remained inconclusive.

Mr Laghari made it clear to the employees that he had no authority to remove the vice chancellor but after making detailed inquiries, he would submit his report to the Sindh governor.

Later, talking to the journalists, he said that he had held talks with the employees and the university administration for ending the strike and the resumption of academic activities. He, however, said that the problems could not be resolved unless the employees called off the protest. A delegation of students also met with the AG and apprised him of their problems.

The employees leaders, however, have resolved to continue their protest till the removal of the vice chancellor.

Forum: The Forum for Restoration of Responsible Governance in Universities and Restoration of Academic Standards in Sindh has condemned the policies of Vice Chancellor Dr Bashir Ahmed Shaikh, Sindh Agriculture University Tandojam. It said that the university and its corporate life were in doldrums and immediate removal of Dr Bashir Shaikh was a genuine demand of the civil society.

Chairman of the Forum, Prof Amir Ali Kadri in a statement said that deteriorating situation at the campus was due to wrong and ill-motivated decision of Dr Bashir Shaikh. He revised the decision adopted five years ago that each university would have its own security system controlled by the director campus to relieve the vice chancellor from administrative matters.

He demanded immediate removal of Dr Bashir Shaikh. He said legitimate rights of the university and its staff must be safeguarded by way of appointing a suitable and honest hand acceptable to all.
