Committee to probe hockey debacle

ISLAMABAD, Sept 5: The Federal Sports Ministry will formulate a three-member enquiry committee to probe the reasons for the pathetic and dismal performance of the Pakistan hockey team at the Beijing Olympics game, highly placed sources confirmed on Friday.

Pakistan finished eighth in the 12-nation hockey competition in Beijing last month.

“Former Olympian Abdul Waheed, a parliamentarian with a sports background and another hockey stalwart will investigate the team’s poor performance in hockey and report within three weeks” he said.

The recommendations, the source said, will be forwarded to the Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani who is also the Patron-in-Chief of the national game.

To a question about the committee’s power and who they would investigate, the source pointed out “they will question anyone especially the team management which accompanied the Beijing bound Pakistan players.”

“It is merely not enough to say sorry after the poor performance in the Olympics. It demands a thorough probe” he said.

Many officials of PHF, including President PHF Mir Zaffarullah Khan Jamali, apologised to the nation and some team management officials also resigned after the squad failed to put up a good show at the Beijing Olympic Games.
