RAWALPINDI, Sept 5: Three of the six posts of deputy inspectors general (DIGs) prisons – headquarters, Rawalpindi and Lahore - have been lying vacant since long making it difficult for the department to manage things properly, Dawn has learnt.
In addition, the post of DIG Multan region has also been lying practically vacant as Mian Farooq Nazir is holding the additional charges of inspector general prisons and DIG headquarters.
At present, Kokab Nadeem Waraich, a BS-19 officer, is serving as DIG Faisalabad jail while Mirza Shahid Saleem Baig, a BPS-18 officer, is waiting for posting as DIG prisons.
A Punjab prison departmental committee on June 21 had recommended the promotion of Mr Baig, who had served as superintendent Adiala jail Rawalpindi twice.
Central Jail Adiala, which was built to accommodate 1,500 prisoners, is at present housing 6,200 prisoners.
In a latest move, the Lahore High Court has ordered the authorities concerned to issue the notification within 15 days for promotion of Mr Baig.
