MITHI, Sept 5: People of Tharparkar district are hoping to get relief from the government’s Ramzan package. The Utility Stores Corporation management has, so far, not supplied the items of daily use to its outlets in Mithi, Diplo, Nagarparkar, Chhachhro.
The Food Department began supplying wheat to chakkis for Rs19.32 per kg from Tuesday, but it was being retailed for Rs25.50 per kg at chakkis – a profit of Rs6 per kg – which was beyond the reach of Tharis.
The district administration and food officials seemed helpless in initiating an action against chakki owners for fleecing the poor.
Mithi Utility Store in-charge when contacted showed his inability to sell flour at Rs15 per kg because of lack of flour due to supply problem.
As per the government policy, chakki having one grinding stone was supplied 21 bags of 100kg wheat per week and as such owners sell flour at Rs24.50 per kg, said some. While in the open market, it was being sold at Rs25.50 per kg.
According to sources, the Food Department officials allow chakki owners to earn Rs6 on per kg after getting their palms greased.
