GUJRANWALA, Sept 1: Central Jail authorities have suggested that the FIA should arrange separate lockup for illegal immigrants arrested by the agency upon their deportation by foreign countries because the jail was already overcrowded up to five times than its capacity.

Currently, there are 4,540 inmates imprisoned in the jail meant for 960.

Talking to Dawn here on Monday, Jail Superintendent Kamran Anjum and Deputy Superintendent Malik Ata said that FIA was arresting scores of people every month who were being detained at the jail.

They said that at least 250 deportees should be shifted to Lahore jails as they were being tried in a Lahore court.

They said that 95 per cent construction work of new jail had been completed but building department was not completing the remaining work for the last several months.

They said that the new building should be handed over to the jail administration instantly. They also said that prisoners would be provided better facilities during Ramazan.

HUMAN AGENTS: An FIA team arrested six more human agents and recovered about a dozen international passports and other documents from them on Monday.

Acting on a tip-off that the accused belonging to Gujranwala division were present in Rawalpindi, FIA additional director Hussain Asghar formed a raiding party for their arrest.

Led by SHO Mian Sabir, the team raided the hideout of the accused and arrested them after a brief encounter. Those arrested were identified as Sajjad Bhatti, Arshad Javaid of Daska, Attique Shafi of Gujjar Khan, Mian Abraiz of Kharian, Saber Malik of Bhatti Bhangoo and Ashfaq of Qila Dedar Singh.

It was learnt that the accused, who had sent a large number of people to Greece illegally, were wanted in 20 cases of human smuggling.

BAZAARS: The district administration has set up 157 fair price shops, 18 Ramazan bazaars and 21 cluster bazaars to provide necessary items to people on cheaper prices during Ramazan. It has also deployed 35 magistrates to check price-hike.

District Coordination Officer Dr. Pervaiz Ahmad Khan said at a briefing here on Monday that fair price shops and Ramazan Bazaars have been set up in various parts of the city.

He said that prices of necessary commodities had already been fixed and notification had been issued in this regard.

He directed magistrates to check the prices and supply of daily-use commodities during Ramazan.

MISHAP: Three people were killed while two others were injured when a tractor-trolley hit a commuter bus on Sheikhupura Road on Monday.

A mini bus was on its way from Gujranwala to Sheikhupura. When it reached near Tetley, a speeding tractor-trolley hit it, killing two passengers on the spot while another succumbed to his injuries at DHQ Hospital. Two passers-by were also injured.

The bodies were sent for identification and autopsy. The police have registered a case.
