Flour in short supply

SHEIKHUPURA, Aug 30: The district administration has failed to streamline the flour supply to people across the district.

On Saturday, central areas of the district did not get enough flour to meet their needs.

Pervaiz said the recently established fair price shops were mostly selling substandard foodstuff, especially flour. He said the administration had set up more than 30 fair price shops in the district, but there was no check on the quality of the stuff they were selling.

He said Manawala, Sharqpur, Ferozwala and Rehmat Colony are some of the areas facing the worst flour shortage.

Distillery unearthed: Ferozewala police on Saturday unearthed a ‘distillery’ set up in Rachna Town where spurious liquor of known local brands was manufactured and then supplied to other cities of the province, arresting four people and recovering 800 bottles of the drink.

The police nabbed Imran, Abu Zar, Jamshaid Masih and others, while the alleged owner, Zafar Iqbal, managed to escape.

Those arrested told police the liquor manufactured in the factory was being supplied to Lahore, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Kharian and other cities through a ring of ‘bootleggers’.

The police also seized a huge quantity of material being used in the preparation of spurious drink. The ‘distillery’ had been operating for two years, the police said.

COP INJURED: A Muhafiz force constable sustained critical injuries when four motorcyclists opened fire on police near Kot Abdul Malik on Saturday.

Reports said four Muhafiz force jawans were patrolling the area on two motorcycles in Factory Area police limits. As they signalled four people riding two motorcycles to stop for routine checking, they opened fire on them, injuring constable Amjad.

The injured constable was rushed to hospital where his condition was said to be serious.

ACCIDENT: As many as 28 passengers were injured, when a bus on its way to Sialkot from Lahore overturned near Chak 44 on GT Road.

The accident occurred when the tie-rod of the overloaded bus malfunctioned. The condition of Naziran Bibi, Asif, Akhtar, Shahbaz and Azmat was said to be serious.
