Fishermen protest illegal fishing

SUKKUR, Aug 30: A large number of fishermen held a demonstration and observed a token hunger strike outside the press club in Thull on Saturday, in protest against what they said illegal fishing by influential men of the area.

The protesters accused former MNA Mir Babul Jakhrani of being involved in illegal fishing in their area. The protest was organised by the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum.

They said that they had been fishing in the Shahi Wah from for decades and paying fees regularly but nowadays the men of former MNA Jakhrani were illegally fishing in their area, inflicting losses on the poor fishermen.

They demanded that the government should take action against the men who were fishing illegally and force them to leave occupation of their fishing area.

GUNNED DOWN: Armed men gunned down a peasant over an old enmity in Garhi Khairo town police limits on Saturday.

Reports said that Abid Hussain was returning home from agricultural fields, when unknown assailants shot him dead near Mehran Football ground and fled.

Police shifted the body to local hospital for post mortem, but did not file any case.

ELECTROCUTED: A woman was electrocuted in Garhi Hassan Sarki village near Thull on Saturday.

Reports said that Ms Khanzadi received an electric shock and died on the spot when she switched on a pedestal fan.
